My research expands the boundaries of who technology is designed for. The gap between who technology is designed for and the long tail of heterogeneous contexts people face in their everyday lives is a serious problem, especially because it often affects individuals who could disproportionately benefit from technological interventions and they disproportionately lack agency to develop those tools. I apply this perspective to work in personal informatics and instrumented spaces (e.g. smart homes), focusing on diverse contexts: accessibility for people with motor disabilities, wellbeing, and personal data analysis. This work furthers our understanding of how technology is used across diverse user contexts so we can create experiences that better fit their needs. I also make related methodological contributions, such as: identifying the ways that HCI research systematically excludes some people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and ways to make our research methods more inclusive; developing methods for engaging users in analyzing their personal data; and exploring opportunities to better translate HCI findings into contextually appropriate behavior change support tools.
